The Akofena is an Adinkra symbol from the Akan people of West Africa, depicting two crossed swords. It is not a symbol of violence. It is a symbol of legitimate authority earned through courage — the recognition that the right to lead is not granted by position but demonstrated through the willingness to stand in the place where standing is most dangerous. The swords cross at the center, which is the point of decision: where two forces meet and one of them must hold.
In Akan tradition, swords were carried by the Sword Bearers of the chief, whose role was not combat but ceremony — the visible proof that authority rested on something real. The Akofena marks that proof.
