Crescent Moon Horn Necklace | Protection & New Beginnings

The crescent moon horn carries one of the oldest protective uses of the lunar symbol. In ancient Rome, the lunula — a small crescent pendant — was worn by girls as a protective amulet until marriage, when it was dedicated to the household gods. In the Islamic tradition, the crescent marks the beginning of the lunar month, the moment the new cycle becomes visible. In both cases the crescent is not the moon in decline but the moon in its first appearance: the sign that something has returned.

The horn shape of this crescent echoes the Neolithic lunar horns found across Mediterranean archaeological sites — the paired bovine horns that represented the moon's crescent form in pre-Bronze Age religion. Old enough that the horns and the moon had not yet been separated into different symbols.
