The peace sign was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. It combines the semaphore signals for the letters N and D — nuclear disarmament — inside a circle. Unlike most symbols, its origin is fully documented and recent. What it does not have in ancient lineage it has in historical weight: it became the visual emblem of the largest peace movements of the twentieth century and is now recognized across every culture that was touched by those movements.

The circle containing the downward lines is not arbitrary. Holtom described it as a person with arms outstretched downward in despair — the posture of someone who has put down everything they were carrying. Peace in this reading is not the absence of conflict. It is the active laying down of the instruments of harm.
