The fairy in the oldest Celtic tradition was not a children's creature. The Fair Folk — aos sí — inhabited the spaces between the human world and the otherworld: hollow hills, liminal zones at dawn and dusk, the boundaries between territories where one jurisdiction ends and another has not yet begun. They were treated with careful respect not because they were simple or harmless but because they operated by entirely different rules: rules of reciprocity, of hospitality, of the kept promise, that made interaction with them a matter requiring attention rather than casual goodwill.

For children, the fairy carries the older meaning in its most available form: the being that comes from the threshold, that grants wishes because it inhabits the zone where what is wished for and what exists are not yet separated. The wish made to a fairy is the wish made at the boundary where it might still be possible.
