Description
The Ouroboros, a serpent or dragon eating its own tail, appears in the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt, in Norse mythology as Jormungandr, in Greek alchemical papyri bearing the inscription hen to pan, the one is the all, and in Gnostic cosmological texts. Independent traditions on opposite sides of the known world arrived at the same image because it encodes something that direct observation of natural cycles makes apparent: that endings and beginnings are not opposites but the same event seen from two positions on the circle.
The alchemists used the Ouroboros to mark the operation of solve et coagula: dissolve and bind again. The dragon does not destroy itself. It feeds its own becoming.
