The rose in the Western esoteric tradition marks the flowering at the point of intersection — what grows when the vertical and horizontal axes of the cross meet with sufficient force. In medieval sacred art, the rose window of the Gothic cathedral is the rose at the center of the cross made architectural: the circular form of the divine placed at the point where the nave and the transept cross, flooding the crossing with colored light. The rose does not decorate the cross. It is what the cross produces.
