The star in its five-pointed form was called the pentagram by the Pythagoreans, who found that every intersection of its lines divides the crossing line in the golden ratio, the proportion that appears in shells, in plant growth, in the human body. They called it the symbol of health: the figure built entirely from the proportions of living growth. In Mesopotamia and across the ancient Near East, the five-pointed star marked divine protection.
