The tomoe is one of the oldest Japanese decorative and religious symbols, appearing on temples, family crests, and sacred objects since the Heian period. In its most common form, the mitsudomoe, three comma-shaped figures rotate around a common center in a continuous motion that has no beginning and no end. The form is related to the triskelion and carries related meaning: the three forces of existence in dynamic balance around a fixed center.

In Shinto tradition the tomoe is associated with the god Hachiman, the deity of archery and war. The rotating triad is the universal symbol of forces in motion that remain in relation: not stillness but dynamic balance, which is the only balance that living systems actually achieve.
