Purple, across virtually every culture that encountered Tyrian dye, has been associated with the highest order of authority precisely because of its cost: the dye extracted from Murex sea snails required thousands of mollusks to produce a single pound of pigment, making purple garments rarer than gold. The Roman Emperors reserved the wearing of full purple for themselves alone. In medieval Europe the sumptuary laws restricted purple to royalty.
