Ancient Greek Garnet Ring | Archaic Granulation Band

Garnet takes its name from the Latin granatum — pomegranate — because of the resemblance between the deep red crystal and the seeds of the fruit that Persephone ate in the underworld, binding herself to both worlds simultaneously. In medieval lapidary tradition, garnet was carried by travelers as protection on long journeys, specifically because it was believed to light the dark: the stone that carries its own illumination when ordinary light fails.

Granulation — the technique of fusing tiny gold or silver spheres onto a metal surface — was mastered by Etruscan goldsmiths in the seventh century BCE and has never been fully replicated by machine. Each sphere is attached by a process that bonds metal to metal without visible solder, a join that is structurally part of the surface rather than added to it. This ring carries both: the stone that lights the dark and the technique that cannot be mechanized.
