The star wreath combines two of the oldest protective symbols in a single form. The star — in its five-pointed form the pentagram, in its six-pointed form the Star of David — has been used as a protective mark across cultures from Mesopotamia through the medieval period, drawn on doorways, stamped on seals, and worn as amulets against harm. The wreath, derived from the laurel crown of Apollo, marks achievement and the divine favor that attends it.
