In classical alchemy, Earth is the fixed element, the principle of containment, of form, of the structure that holds what would otherwise disperse. The alchemical symbol for earth is a downward-pointing triangle bisected by a horizontal line: the triangle of water with its descending force held at the surface, prevented from sinking all the way through. Earth receives, holds, and gives form to what the other elements provide.

In the cycle of the seasons, earth is not one season but the condition of all of them: the ground that holds the seed through winter, receives the rain of spring, supports the growth of summer, and takes back the fallen matter of autumn to begin the cycle again. The earth element is not passive. It is the active principle of containment without which nothing else has a surface to act upon.
