Eris is the Greek goddess of discord, the figure who threw the golden apple inscribed to the fairest among the goddesses at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, setting in motion the chain of events that produced the Trojan War. In the Roman tradition she appears as Discordia. In modern astronomy, the dwarf planet Eris is the most massive known object in the outer solar system beyond Neptune, named for the goddess of discord because its discovery forced the reclassification of Pluto and disrupted the established order of planetary science.
