The skull in the memento mori tradition marks death as a fact to be accepted, the finite container of the infinite aspiration. The snake coiled around the skull adds the alchemical dimension: the serpent of transformation, the Ouroboros principle applied locally. The skull does not simply mark death. It marks the death that is also a shedding: the snake that leaves its old skin behind is not dying. It is completing the cycle that the old form had become too small to contain.
