The Möbius strip was discovered — or constructed — by the German mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius in 1858: a surface formed by taking a strip, giving it a half-twist, and connecting the ends. The result is a surface with one side and one edge. It is geometrically impossible to paint the inside without painting the outside, because there is no inside and outside: the surface is continuous. The infinity symbol derives from this form, and the Möbius strip is its three-dimensional expression.

In symbolic terms, the Möbius form makes a specific argument: that what appears to be a boundary between two things is, upon examination, the surface of a continuous whole. The inside and the outside are not separate. The beginning and the end are not separate. The form itself is the proof, not the description of it.
